smith. president obama saying that immigration reform is, quote: within our grasp. and today he spelled out his plan to fix the system just a day after a bipartisan group of senators released their idea. but one of those republican senators telling fox news the president could end up hurting the cause. mr. obama flew to las vegas today to unveil his plan. one of the major sticking points is border security. now, just yesterday the white house enforcement has never been better but today the president called for making more improvements. and he played up the similarities between his idea and the senator's proposal. >> the time has come for common sense, comprehensive, immigration reform. >> for the first time in many years, republicans and democrats seem ready to tackle this problem together. >> but analysts say there are differences, unlike the senators, the president did not say the feds have to improve border security before illegal immigrants can take a so-called path of citizenship. this morning on america's newsroom, one of those senators republican marco rubio telling me that is a

his ideas for reform of the immigration system. >> president obama took air force one out to nevada yesterday for the first trip of his second term to talk immigration reform. in a big high school auditorium filled with people chanting to "yes, it's possible." president obama essentially said he's glad a bipartisan group of eight u.s. senators has come together to put the ideas they share into an immigration reform bill that president obama didn't exactly endorse the bill because it hasn't actually been written yet. something the president did say, though, is that a top priority needs to be giving illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship. >> we have to deal with the 11 million individuals who are here illegally. we all agree that these men and women should have to earn their way to citizenship. but for comprehensive immigration reform to work, it must be clear from the outset that there is a pathway to citizenship. >> the president also said that citizens shouldn't have to wait years for their families to join them here in the states, and that is where the differences between the pre

-senator barack obama who gutted the guest worker provision out of that immigration reform and effectively killed it off. so it's great that now durbin is on board along with a number of republicans. the big question is, though, later today we're going to hear from the president. is the president really serious about immigration reform? after all, marco rubio has been out there, but has the white house reached out to him so far? absolutely not. >>gretchen: here's the plan they're talking about, this gang of eight. register and pass a background check. you would be required to do that if you're illegal. pay a fine and back taxes. earn probationary legal status. learn english. continue to pay taxes. show work history and then get a green card and then apply for citizenship. effectively you would go to the back of the line. so this is a bipartisan effort. remember, some of these commissions have come together in the past, in the last four years, specifically about the debt and the president hasn't necessarily taken on the plan that they have come up with. so this will be really important to see if i
